  • Tremap welcomes University of Exeter students!

Lots of challenges await a tech start-up like Tremap. There are, however, some great advantages to being small, agile and fast-growing! One of those is the ability to provide some truly unique opportunities for university students just entering the work world. We're developing in all kinds of areas at Tremap. And as we move into new territory, we're delighted to give a number of students the chance to join us in our journey. We're partnering with Exeter University, in SW England to offer a range of student placements. Successful candidates will join us on at least four different development projects, ranging from video and photographic app content libraries, to multilingual taxonomy projects, to helping design and build the Tremap global tree database. Tremap offers candidates extremely flexible weekly commitment schedules, and total freedom to work remotely or at its offices in Cornwall. Potential applicants can apply via Handshake. • The giant Quillay of the Chilean Andes

Santiago, the capital of Chile, is ideally placed at the foot of the Andes Mountains - one can escape into nature within just a few minutes. In the foothills of the Andes grows the "sclerophyllous forest" that occurs in the Central Zone of Chile. The trees growing in this region are used to poor soils and a dry climate, experiencing only three months of partial rains. On my recent tour to the area, I wanted to visit a solitary Quillay (Quillaja saponaria) once again - a stately tree growing at 1,900 meters above sea level. It's the largest known example of the species. Access to this tree requires a climb of about three hours. Quillay (Quillaja saponaria) in the foothills of the Andes Mountains The Quillaja saponaria is an endemic tree from the central zone of Chile. The popular name Quillay comes from the Mapuche word "Küllay", which means "to wash." Indigenous people have used it as soap to wash clothes, hair and teeth. Its scientific name saponaria means "soap," because the bark can be made into a powder that serves as soap. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the massive exploitation of its bark for export to Europe and North America led to the destruction of many Quillay forests. For this reason, since 1944, the extraction of its bark requires special authorisation. In recent years, Quillay saponins have been a source of key ingredients for vaccine production, including the experimental Novavax COVID-19 vaccine. • Tremap pilot project in Falmouth, UK

In cooperation with Falmouth Town Council (Cornwall, UK) Tremap has launched an exciting new pilot project in Kimberley Park, one of the town's best loved green spaces. The gardens are home to a rich variety of species and are enjoyed daily by over 50,000 inhabitants of Falmouth and surrounding areas. We're delighted to join Falmouth Town Council in transforming this beautiful green space into an engaging, educational virtual world, accessible on the phones of every park visitor. The Tremap app provides species information, history, cultural notes and high resolution photographs for every living asset in the park. Far from being a simple plant ID app, Tremap eliminates all uncertainty, guessing, searching the Internet and waiting while apps churn and process. Tremap instantly provides the viewer with accurate common names, species and background horticultural information, specific to the exact tree, woody plant or shrub the visitor has clicked on. Tremap has now successfully completed phase one of the pilot project. The entire set of taxa in the garden are mapped and over 870 living assets have been geo-positioned using our new GNSS satellite receiver equipment to an average accuracy of 30 cm. We're now excited to progress to the second phase of the pilot project: tailoring our Tremap app to provide the most user-friendly, engaging, innovative virtual user guide for urban green spaces ever developed. Watch this space as we develop our app interface, and follow us early next year at Kimberley Park in Falmouth when we publicly launch Tremap there: the world's simplest, most engaging, most transformative green space visitor guide!
